History of IMM

In 1987, Indianapolis Medical Management (IMM) began providing physician practice management services to primary care physicians that practiced primarily within Community Health Network (CHNw). In the early- to mid-1990s, hospitals and health systems began employing primary care physicians to protect their referral base from their competition. In 1993, IMM responded to this trend by establishing practice management "franchises" with other hospitals within Indiana to support this primary care physician employment strategy. These franchises were developed in Anderson, Bloomington, Goshen, Kokomo, Muncie, Munster, Richmond and Vincennes. As the cost of this employment strategy escalated, many hospitals elected to exit this strategy. Today, while strong relationships with many of these hospitals still exist, only the Goshen and Richmond franchises remain.

Also during the late 1990s, Community Physicians of Indiana (CPI), Community Health Network's primary care physician-hospital organization was formed. By 2002, the practice management services that had been provided to the CHNw employed primary care physicians by IMM were transitioned to CPI. This signaled a significant change in strategic direction for IMM. Historically, the primary customer of IMM had been the primary care physician; going forward, the focus was on the specialist physician. Today, IMM provides services to over 150 physician clients in approximately 80 locations throughout Indiana.
